Modular platform for flexible automation solutions FIS 3.0 / HERMOS AG
FIS is a modular software platform developed by HERMOS AG for the automation of technical systems across a variety of industries. Combining monitoring, control and analysis in a single system, it can be adapted to a wide variety of application scenarios thanks to its flexible and modular design. The interface is designed to be user-friendly, displaying only content that is relevant to the user's role, tasks and project. This keeps things intuitive and clear, even with all the different functions. Standardised UI components and smart navigation patterns enable both simple and complex plant structures to be mapped efficiently while ensuring a consistent user experience.
Challenge and Usage
HERMOS is a leading provider of innovative automation and IT solutions for buildings, industry, energy and the environment. A comprehensive software platform for integrating technical systems across the entire automation spectrum has been created with FIS and the associated framework. What sets it apart is that, in addition to being used as a monitoring and analysis tool, the software also offers solutions for operating and controlling manufacturing and production facilities.
The ways in which the software is used vary greatly between different trades and industries. To accommodate this diversity, a universal and modular basis had to be created that could be easily and fully automatically adapted to any application.
Complexity meets System
To counteract the high complexity of projects implemented with FIS, a robust and comprehensive foundation of simple navigation and interaction patterns and well-designed UI components was created. This design system formed the basis for the numerous individual modules that comprise the framework. The resulting flexibility of the structure, combined with the clearly defined behaviours of the individual elements, enables the easy adaptation of a wide variety of system structures and functionalities within FIS. This ensures high usability and a consistent user experience.
What you see is what you need
FIS's comprehensive approach offers users an incredible number of options, which can quickly leave them feeling lost or overwhelmed. To avoid this, FIS employs clearly defined content and function restrictions, filtering all options and elements displayed on the user interface according to project, user, role and task. This offers users a tailored focus on the essentials. This 'what you see is what you need' approach creates a consistently tidy and easily accessible interface, allowing users to concentrate on their tasks without any unnecessary distractions.
Fully customisable
The FIS framework is based on an extensive library of standard components, icons, and customised solutions. As well as the familiar UI components, it also documents special solutions for data preparation in tables, special trend functions, plant graphics, configuration options and navigation patterns. All components are available in dark and light themes to cover all application situations and individual needs. The entire project has been prepared and documented as a design system in the form of a living style guide in Figma, ensuring efficient, interdisciplinary collaboration between designers and developers in the long term.
