User Interface for Sustainable Plastic Extrusion EVO OS 3.0 / Reifenhäuser

A company-wide user interface was developed for the Reifenhäuser Group, a technology leader in sustainable plastics extrusion. For the first time, it unites the three business areas of blown film, flat film, and nonwovens with a uniform design language. The machines process sensitive materials such as biopolymers in complex processes to produce end products for medicine, hygiene, packaging, etc. in hall-filling plants. The project focused on harmonizing historically grown, heterogeneous requirements.

Challenge and Usage

The Reifenhäuser Group combines three traditional areas—blown film, flat film, and nonwovens—with different processes and operating concepts. Using blown film as an example, a uniform, scalable UI system was developed that meets the heterogeneous and complex requirements of these highly automated, multi-story machines. The system has a scalable design and can now be transferred to other extrusion areas, with consistent user guidance and strong recognizability.

Complex Technology, Easy to Use

In order to simplify everyday operation of complex machines, the new interface design was developed with a focus on the user. In a user-centered process, real-life usage scenarios were analyzed and validated through usability tests. The result is a modular, scalable, and extremely flexible interface that combines technical complexity and user-friendliness at the highest level. Assistance systems, informative illustrations, and a clear visual hierarchy support the operator in setting up, monitoring, and optimizing sensitive production processes. This will help prevent malfunctions, such as material breakage, in the future.

Film-Folding

The design of the interface levels is derived from the film production process, inspired by the descent of the film after the bubble. This idea was abstracted and translated into a geometric design structure with uniform isometric angles and perspectives that create a subtle spatial depth. As an overarching design element, the concept ensures visual consistency and content-related reference to the real world of machines, making the complex user interface more intuitive and tangible.

Design System

We have developed a design system that ensures visual and functional consistency across all applications and prevents unwanted excesses. From the outset, we have consistently developed all content and functions in a user-centered manner, with the aim of understanding real needs and translating them into clear, understandable interfaces. To this end, we have clearly defined and documented UI components, layouts, colors, typography, and interaction patterns. The system creates a common foundation, which is particularly important for a group of companies with multiple business areas and distributed development teams. It reduces redundancies, promotes consistent user experiences, and sustainably improves software quality.
