Buildings are becoming increasingly intelligent, but as the technology evolves, so do the demands on user guidance and visual clarity. Together with Neuberger Gebäudeautomation, we asked ourselves: How can we design interfaces that provide orientation, build trust, and fit seamlessly into any architectural environment? The result is a thoughtfully developed design system – from room panel to tablet – that reduces complexity and puts users at the center.

Challenge and Application

Our main task was to represent complex building processes in a clear, intuitive, and brand-consistent way. To achieve this, we developed a cohesive concept that combines technology with user-friendliness and allows seamless integration across various areas of use. Whether it’s a room control panel in an office, a desktop application for managing entire buildings, or an iPad version for hotel rooms – the focus was on designing a unified visual system that remains easy to use across all platforms.

Roompanel with Style

We started by developing a UI for a room control panel that combines user comfort with high-quality design. The room panel is used in a wide range of building types, from corporate environments to public institutions, and therefore addresses a highly diverse user group. Clear, easily recognizable icons, a minimal color palette, and intuitive navigation provide optimal orientation for all users.

The industrial design of the panel is also reflected in various UI components, creating a consistent experience. The seamless transition between the display and the panel frame contributes to a harmonious overall appearance. The design was developed in both light and dark themes, and optimized for both portrait and landscape orientations.

Building Management System with Design Strategy

In the second phase of the project, we analyzed Neuberger’s existing building management system, improved its usability, and adapted the UI to the newly developed design system. Even though this system is used exclusively by experts, our first goal was to make navigation clearer and more intuitive. Combined with the new design, the user interface is now significantly more structured, helping users quickly find their way around and enabling more efficient management and maintenance of building operations.

Hotel App for High Expectations

To meet the demands of hotel environments, we extended the design system for use on the iPad. The UI allows guests to conveniently control lighting, temperature, and music directly from the tablet. The user interface was specifically designed for different room configurations and can be flexibly adapted to the layout of each individual room.
