01.05.17 - New ROVEMA HMI on the Interpack 2017
The new user interface for the ROVEMA packaging machines is complete and was presented for the first time to the broad public on the Interpack 2017 Fair in Düsseldorf from May 4 to 10. The project was exhibited on the ROVEMA fair stand in Hall 15 / B25.

10.03.17 - Concept Laser WRX 3.0 wins iF DESIGN AWARD
Our user interface design for the CL WRX 3.0 software suite was one of the winners of this year’s iF DESIGN AWARD, the leading international design label. CL WRX 3.0 was a winner in Communication in the Apps/Software category. The awards ceremony was held in Munich on 10 March.

HMI Project is assisting ROVEMA GmbH with the design and development of a new user interface for machine operation. ROVEMA GmbH, based in Fernwald near Frankfurt am Main, is a leading international manufacturer of packaging machines and lines for a wide range of products and applications.

02.12.16 - Concept Laser WRX 3.0 on the formnext in Frankfurt

The new user interface of the Software Suite of Concept Laser has been completed. Concept Laser is a manufacturer of systems for 3D printing of metal components. After 12 months in the development process the software was first presented from November 15 - 18, 2016 o the formnext, the leading international trade fair for additive manufacturing processes, in Frankfurt am Main.

25.11.16 - Bronze at the DDC for KAMCOS 2.0
Our project KAMCOS 2.0 won Bronze in the category "Digital Media" at the "GUTE GESTALTUNG 17" competition of the Deutscher Designer Club. The award ceremony took place on Friday, September 25, 2016 during at the Bockenheimer Depot in Frankfurt am Main.

02.09.16 - UX Design Award for KAMCOS 2.0

12.04.16 - KAMCOS 2.0 in the current "Page"
Our KAMCOS 2.0 project for the textile machine manufacturer Karl Mayer is mentioned briefly in the current issue of the "Page" design trade journal. The report deals with operating concepts for multiple devices. In KAMCOS 2.0 a QR code can be scanned from the HMI of the machine via a smartphone in order to transfer important data to the Service division in case of an error.

Our KAMCOS 2.0 project has received an iF DESIGN AWARD2016 in the discipline Communication - Apps / Software. The number of competitors was huge: the international high-pro le jury assessed more than 5,000 entries from 53 countries in order to determine who would receive this coveted seal of excellence. Our Hapa/Laetus NEW TECHNOLOGY project has won the Red Dot Award: Communication Design in the Interface Design category. HMI Project supports Baumann in the development of a new user interface for robot cells. The owner-run company Baumann GmbH, with its headquarters in Amberg, Bavaria, has been working in the area of industrial automation for over 30 years and has 400 employees. 01.10.15 - Markus Buberl Speaker at the B&R Innovation Days
Markus Buberl spoke on the topic of "User Interface Design in the Context of Industry 4.0" on the "B&R Innovation Days 2015" event. A wide-ranging program dealing with current topics in mechanical and process engineering was presented to the visitors during the 2-day event of the automation technology manufacturer. 15.07.13 - Weber Power Control wins the Red Dot quality seal!

08.05.13 - Weber Power Control exhibited at IFFA 2013 in Frankfurt
The new touch-based interface for the Weber Maschinenbau group is now complete. The jury agreed: In recognition of its outstanding design quality the ONE HMI Interface Design will receive the sought-after red dot in “the red dot award: communication design”, one of the largest and most internationally acclaimed design competitions. This testifies to the prize-winner’s very high level of design. 15 jury members, all of whom are design experts of international repute, assessed every single one of the total 6,468 entries in a process that lasted several days.

Each project starts with a survey of technical specifications and the documentation of all functions. Unlike in the consumer area, in the industrial environment the user is not the buyer of the machinery or units. Accordingly, the different requirements from all divisions involved, such as development, service, product management and marketing, must be harmonized at an early stage.

Interviews with different persons / operators and service technicians pursuant to EN ISO 9241-110 are also part of information retrieval. Here, it is very important to determine and document the precise operating processes and steps, the tasks and the user behaviour. During this phase, we arrange the contents and group the functions in a logical manner. Menus are structured. The basic contents framework is created which serves as a foundation for the concepts to follow. All collected data is evaluated. Flow charts are generated to illustrate the structure.

During the concept phase, the operation principles are defined. This comprises all aspects from interaction options of the interface up to the arrangement of the hierarchy in user levels. The graphic arrangement of the screen is implemented by means of wireframes. At this stage, a first rough layout of the application is generated.

With an interactive PDF clickdummy, test users can try out selected use cases in a storyboard-type process. In workshops, we guide qualified workers in the operation of various user roles. In a final user survey, we gather feedback on the users’ experience. The tests can easily take place at your company or at a selected customer’s company. Finally, the optimization of the operating concept is incorporated in the design process.

Trying out operation friendliness and software ergonomics by means of animation studies and prototyping is a major part of the project. Example work processes are run through in the planned software environment and on the final hardware. This allows the user friendliness to be verified. Multi-touch and gesture control can be used as a permanent element in the basic operation concept or as an extended function, for example for faster expert navigation or as a shortcut. We continually conduct studies on multitouch and its efficient and secure application in an industrial environment, and we incorporate the results into the development of our projects.

We supply premium screen design for structuring screen areas and weighting the functions. This also includes the clear layout of SCADA or BDE systems. To ensure a consistent company image, the existing corporate design from the print and web areas is taken into account.

Icon Design

Navigation elements are visualized by icons and key functions by pictograms, some of which may be animated. This promotes fast orientation on the operator panel and is the best preparation for multi-lingual applications. Regarding the use of icons, it must be observed that they cannot be used as a substitute for text. Instead, they serve to assist the user in the quick and secure operation once they have become familiar with their meaning.

We deliver graphic elements optionally as PNG files or as finished SVG or WPF components. In addition, we produce clickdummys and animated studies in order to illustrate the operating concepts and be able to test them at an early stage. User Interface Design for packaging machines

Touch-optimized user interface for the machines and systems of a packaging machine manufacturer. The user-focused and intuitive application is used on multi-touch panels at the machines. The interface has a modular structure and provides a uniform design for all different types of machines. The navigation concept separates day-to-day tasks from setup functions. The contents on the production side are tailored to each machine type. The application allows the users to compile their own favorite functions. Monitoring of both individual machines and of complete lines is possible. Monitoring on mobile devices supplements the functional scope. The operator control has a process-oriented structure and is easy to understand. In the case of complex configuration tasks the user is supported actively by means of step-by-step instructions. A context-sensitive help guarantees rapid access to information whenever required. The reduced and consistent design provides the information volume in a compact form so that important process values are communicated directly and comprehensibly. Ensuring that the operators are supported optimally in their work.

Web-based Content Management System for Industrial Applications

With the "New HMI" project for the packaging manufacturer ROVEMA, HMI Project is for the first time presenting a Web-based HMI that can be configured completely through a graphical user interface. The aim was to equip all the machine types and expansion levels with a uniform graphical user interface. Thanks to the integrated editing mode all the customizing work required in the case of demanding special machine construction can be carried out rapidly. Functions can be added or modified intuitively without any knowledge of HTML5 or JavaScript. In the case of elements that are used repeatedly, functions, function groups or complete pages can be stored for repeated usage in a central library. From there the user can use them for individual machines or all models. All modifications of projects can be traced individually at any time thanks to the integrated central versioning system and can be set back if required. In order to support the designer optimally, the layout is created automatically through simple parameters so that the structuring always remains intuitively comprehensible. To this purpose the real-time preview provides direct feedback. Without additional adaptation work the contents remain responsive and can be displayed on various terminal devices and display sizes. Thanks to the client-server architecture several users can work simultaneously on projects and can access the common database without manual exchange of the HMI states being required.

User interface design of a software suite for systems for 3D-printing of metal components

The software is used in a wide variety of utilization scenarios on Touch Panels, PCs and mobile devices and has a modular structure. The complete production process can be accompanied and the status of all the system components monitored at all times. User operation is workflow-oriented and is structured intuitively. The interface has a clear layout and each app is color-coded. Construction process progress and all key figures are easy to understand. The functionality can be customized user-specifically and extended through widgets.

Touch-optimized user interface design for textile machines.

User interface design for textile machines in the field of warp knitting machines, technical textiles and warp preparation. The intuitive and user-oriented operating concept with its modular structure uses a uniform interface for the wide range of machine types. The contents of the production side can be customized to the requirements of user roles or machine properties. The main navigation has a process-oriented structure. The operators are guided through their daily tasks. Functional animations support the interaction. Feature extensions on mobile devices round off the project.

Generic HTML5 Frontend Showcase

Our HTML5 frontend Showcase exemplifies the scenario of a dashboard-operation, how widgets can behave responsive when interacting and changing the screen size. All interaction elements follow a predefined logic and use the available space always optimal. All possible devices such as desktop computers, tablets or mobile phones can be used via a web browser to display the interface. The interface automatically adapts to different screen sizes. The frontend Showcase is part of our HTML5 frameworks which we provide via our partner HMI Logic.

Touch-optimized User Interface Design for printing and control systems

For the machine and system developers Hapa AG and Laetus GmbH a common intuitive operating concept was created whose design adapts responsive to numerous panel sizes and mobile devices. The design has a clear visual information hierarchy and integrates seamlessly into the panel hardware. The modular navigation concept is workflow oriented and scalable up to plant management. Contextual help and assistance systems are an integral part of the user-centered interface. All contents can be adjusted depending on user roll, workstation purpose or machine configuration.

Touch-optimized user interface design for high end slicing machines.

The interface is designed modular. It can be adapted to different machine types. Heart of the interaction is the dynamic page layout. It enables constant supervision of the most important production key figures. The layout is responsive and adapts to new requirements after interaction. The dashboard – central monitoring and operation view – summarizes complex machine processes and displays them clearly. The depth of information can be extended by intuitive swipe gestures. So frequently used parameters can be quickly manipulated. In a workflow-oriented menu all production parameters are accessible grouped by either product processing steps or machine components. Further components are outsourced from the regular operation to an app-like view. It can be expanded by optional modules. Also an alternative skinning for a subcompanies smaller panel was provided. The frontend was developed using web technology to support a system wide uniform appearance and quick adaption to mobile devices.

Oystar One HMI

Case Study One HMI

The project One HMI shows the development of a uniform human-machine interface for the OYSTAR group. With its 10 manufacturing companies, the international OYSTAR group is one of the market leaders in the packaging industry. We were commissioned to create a uniform operation concept and software design for the requirements of 12 different technologies, 36 machine types, and 3 monitor sizes. This example shows how we apply our experience, knowledge, and team spirit to complete this ambitious project in a very short time. Now, the design is being used on OYSTAR machines under the product name "TEOS - The Easy Operation System".

Focused on our Customer Needs

Analyse - Interfacedesign Status Quo before harmonisation

At the beginning of the project there were 12 applications to be put to the test. Criteria such as simplicity of use, role functionality and adaptabilty for individual usage environments were important considerations. Just as important were the analyses which we undertook directly with OYSTAR’S customers. With the machines running and work taking place as normal, we were able to see and understand just how the complex workflows and production processes took place and were able to handle and design accordingly.

One Concise Control Concept

Through a survey of machine users, service technicians and developers, we researched the requirements of the different user types. Using this knowledge, we developed a control concept to suit every machine.


Using wireframes – schematically simplified drafts – we defined the fundamentals for the design of the interface. With the help of flow charts and in consultation with the client, we structured the information architecture.

We’ve used a modern wide screen format as the basis for our screen design. All the interface functions are allocated their own particular field on the screen: The most important information about the production process and what’s happening with the machine can be recognised at a glance using the status bar. The main navigation toolbar is situated ergonomically at the right-hand side of the screen.

These were defined at the start of the project and were the basis for all the structural and creative decisions that followed. Simplicity of use was our utmost priority at every stage.

The low-level user has been considered in all our structural decisions. Their everyday tasks have been prioritised. Depending on the level of the user, the interface can be extended to include other functions.

Customized Operator Panel

The aim of the custom designed ONE HMI panel by Prime Cube was making operation easier, more ergonomic and more intuitive. It is designed as a stand-alone system for support arm installation. The stainless steel housing is IP65 protected all-around. Due to seamless integration of the glass front, the device is easily to clean. An operator uses the software's GUI intuitively with the multi-touch capable, capacitive touch screen. Display sizes range from 25 cm over 39 cm to 53 cm. Defined operations can be proceeded directly with capacitive controls or electromechanical devices. All device types provide fanless cooling thanks to Intel Atom CPU and the use of especially energy-efficient components.
Right from the start, HMI Project was involved in the industrial design process in an advisory function. This ensured the optimum harmonization of hardware and software design.

The ONE HMI Interface features a coherent and easy to use surface with high quality images. The systemised structuring can be adapted for any use and is easy to tailor to individual needs. The concise surface layout is quick and easy to learn, thus simplifying the handling of the machine. Every stage in the development process has taken place according to DIN EN ISO 9241 -210.

Having looked at ergonomic studies, we have designed the touch screen with adequate space between the controls ensuring control errors kept to a minimum.

Objects like buttons and input fields are depicted 3-dimensionally, making it easier for the user to observe and recognise what they are doing. Depending on the level of the user, only the information which they need for their particular tasks are shown.

Harmonious Colour concept

The interface has bright richly contrasting colours and tones, making it easier to read and more interesting to look at. The colour scheme is based on the colours in the customers own corporate design. The muted colours are differentiated using different tones. Important Information by Prototyping

A trial run using a prototype was a great help in the development phase. This was implemented by GTI-control in a parallel project. Here, we could not only try out the design but also test typical action and interaction steps using reference users. We were thus able to integrate the insight gained in our design process to further optimize usability.

The styleguide has been provided as a dokuWiki site which you can access any time on the internet. Here you can find out all the information you need in order to implement the HMI interface software. It gives you all the exact measurements and a clearly laid-out download area. The online style guide is the tool you need for guaranteeing successful implementation of the creative elements. Here you can experience the consistency of the concept and get the look and feel of all OYSTAR’s applications. Using the community function, effective communications between designers and developers can be made accessible to anyone involved.

A special feature is the use case library. Special solutions and upgrades that develop during the implementation are documented here. It also serves as a source of reference for all the developers working abroad.

Präventive Wartung

Visualization and evaluation of monitoring data across production lines significantly contribute to the optimization of work processes and machine utilization. Preventive maintenance, i.e. the advance identification of pending mechanical and electrical problems, can help to avoid expensive downtimes and reduce the stock keeping of spare parts. By means of mobile devices, the operator has a comfortable control center view of all machines at any time – from almost any place.
RF-ID allows for unambiguous identification of users or of the position of an output device in the machine workshop.

HMI Project was founded in 2011 by Markus Buberl and Christian Rudolph after many years of successful cooperation. Contributing experiences from different design disciplines, the two partners complement each other perfectly.



We work in a small, flexible team of four communication designers and one media designer. For ongoing projects, we extend our staff to a maximum of eight with freelancers based near our site, using a network of experienced colleagues.
